OSU Organic Growers' Club- Student Farm
A Little Bit About Us...

Kyndal Webb
I thought that our time working at the OSU Organic Growers Farm was really interesting and fun. It was great taking the things we've learned about in class and applying them to real-life situations. Being able to experience how a community farm works and take part in it was really awesome and I liked it so much more than I expected to. It was great seeing the system they have going there and offering up some time to help things move along. I would definitely like to go and help out more anytime I can.

I had only been out to the student farm once, for the Earth Day Hoo Haa a couple of years ago. While that was fun and the free food was great, I don't think I got a good idea of what the student farm is all about until we spent our two nights out there for the work parties. I also have zero knowledge of organic farming, so this was truly an eye opening experience for me. I went into it thinking I just needed to get it done for the projects, to get the points, but I enjoyed getting out there and doing work! Once the weather gets better, I'd like to go to more thursday night work parties, they are a good way to get outside and be involved with the OSU community. Since I'll be graduating this year, planting and harvesting vegetables at the farm has made me excited for when I get my own house/apartment, and can try my hand at planting somethings, and growing them with an organic mindset. One thing I found interesting—to leave the roots of the old plants in! I didn't know that contributed so much to the biology of the soil, and made the soil better for future crops.

I have always been curious about farming because I come from a non-rural area. Having a chance to work at the OSU student farms has given me a chance to fulfill something on my bucket list. It has given me the resources to plant my own garden one day; a successful one, after learning all the components that go into good soil management. The Organic Growers Student Farm has given me a real life perspective of everything taught in lecture.

I had a great time helping out at the Organic Student Growers Farm. I helped out two different days and in those two days I helped plant garlic, harvest leeks, I learned how to properly set up signs in the soil beds, about planting rotations, bees, chickens, the soil and much more. I really enjoyed seeing student being apart of something really amazing and beneficial. This was also a great experience to get to know some of the students in my soils class. For anyone who has not been to the Organic Growers Club farm I very much recommend taking a visit and/or getting involved. Thursday evenings there is free hot food!

Being out on the farm was definitely an experience. It helped put a lot of what we?ve been talking about in lectures into a real life context that made sense. Who would have thought there was more to planting a seed then just putting it in the ground and waiting till something green sprouts out. Understanding the whole process from start to finish, beginning with the type of soils and how they even got there, to which would be better suited for what kind of planting, to the harvest and rotation are only the basics. Everyone that volunteers, has such a passion for the farm and what they?re doing, it is inspiring. This is the reality.

I really enjoyed my experience at the Organic Growers Club student farm. Going to college and living in dorms or apartments makes it difficult to work in the dirt and really make a connection with the food that you eat. It is nice to have a place to go to contribute to one of the most basic requirements of life; food. After experiencing the effort and the community at the Organic Growers Club, I would like to continue to work there and experience the efforts from the beginning to the end of a growing season.
